Understanding the financial investment for Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is an important part of planning your mental health care journey. At Journey Clinical, we want to make sure cost is never a barrier to getting the information you need to make an informed decision.
This guide covers everything in one place, from insurance coverage and payment timing to affordability options and a personalized cost calculator.
How is KAP priced?
KAP at Journey Clinical involves two separate cost categories: medical costs paid to Journey Clinical and therapy costs paid directly to your therapist. These are billed independently. Understanding this distinction upfront is the clearest way to understand what you will pay and when.

What If My Insurance Is Not In Network?
If Journey Clinical is not in network with your plan, you may still have out of network benefits that can help cover a portion of your medical appointment costs. Many patients receive 60 to 80% reimbursement for the costs of their medical appointments. Additionally, we can still match you with a therapist who accepts your insurance, even if you are not in network for our medical appointments.

A Closer Look: Full Cost Breakdown
For patients who want a more detailed understanding of exactly what they will pay and when, here is the complete breakdown.
Part 1: Journey Clinical Medical Costs
Journey Clinical bills you for two things: your medical appointments with our providers and your ketamine medication.
When Do You Pay?
Payments are made at two points in your treatment:
First Payment: At scheduling your intake appointment
Your first payment covers your 1-hour medical intake evaluation and your first two doses of ketamine medication.
- Self pay: $362
- With insurance: $112 for non-covered services (including medication), plus any applicable copay, coinsurance, or deductible for your intake appointment
Second Payment: At scheduling your follow-up appointment
Your second payment covers your 30-minute follow-up medical appointment and six additional doses of ketamine medication, bringing you to a full course of 8 dosing sessions.
- Self pay: $358
- With insurance: $208 for non-covered services (medication), plus any applicable copay, coinsurance, or deductible for your follow-up appointment
Important note: Medication, such as ketamine, is considered a non-covered service regardless of insurance plan. Your insurance coverage applies to the medical appointment portion of your care.
Part 2: Therapy Costs
Every Journey Clinical patient works with a licensed, KAP-trained therapist throughout their treatment. Therapy costs are paid directly to your therapist and are completely separate from what you pay Journey Clinical.
Therapy sessions include:
- Preparation sessions before dosing
- Support during dosing sessions
- Integration sessions after each dose
Preparation and integration sessions typically last 1 hour and are fully eligible for insurance coverage. Dosing sessions typically last 2 hours, with 1 hour paid out of pocket for supervision and one hour eligible for insurance coverage as therapeutic support.
Therapy costs vary based on your therapist's hourly rate and your insurance benefits. We can match you with a therapist who accepts your insurance, which can significantly reduce this portion of your overall cost.
Affordability Options
We are committed to making KAP as accessible as possible. If cost is a concern, here are the options available to you:
Sliding Scale Rates
A limited number of sliding scale rates are available to patients who otherwise would not be able to afford the cost of treatment. Eligibility is typically based on receiving a sliding scale rate from your therapist as well. If you are interested in applying, please email patient-support@journey.clinic.
HSA and FSA
Both Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts can be used to pay for Journey Clinical medical appointments and therapy sessions.
Out of Network Reimbursement
Even if we are not in network with your plan, partial reimbursement may be available through your out of network benefits. You can add your insurance information to your patient portal and email patient-experience@journey.clinic to receive a full overview of your coverage.
Psycholytic (Low-Dose) Sessions
Psycholytic dosing sessions typically last 1.5 to 2 hours compared to 2 to 3 hours for standard dosing, due to lower ketamine doses. This can be a more cost-effective option for some patients. Bring this up with your therapist or Journey Clinical provider during your intake to see if it is the right fit.
Group KAP Sessions
Group dosing sessions, available in person or virtually, allow you to join with other KAP clients and share the cost of therapeutic support. You can discuss this with your therapist or indicate your interest in group sessions when getting matched.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the medication cost change with insurance? Medication is a non-covered service, meaning it falls under the category of digital tools, on-demand services, and some prescription medications such as ketamine. It is priced the same regardless of your insurance plan. Your insurance coverage applies to the medical appointment portion of your care.
Can I use my HSA or FSA to pay for treatment? Yes. Both medical appointments and therapy sessions are eligible expenses for HSA and FSA accounts.
Do I need to pay for the full course of treatment upfront? No. Payments are made in two stages. Your first payment is due when you schedule your intake appointment, and your second payment is due when you schedule your follow-up appointment. Payments for therapy sessions are paid directly to your selected therapist.
What if I am not eligible for treatment after my intake appointment? If our medical team determines you are not eligible for KAP for any reason, you will receive a full refund.
Will my costs go toward my deductible? Yes, your medical appointment costs typically apply toward your deductible depending on how your plan is structured.
Do you accept Medicare or Medicaid? At this time, Journey Clinical does not accept Medicare or Medicaid for clinician visits. This includes Medicare Advantage and Medicaid plans managed by commercial insurance providers (for example, Medi-Cal is not accepted). However, we do support out of network benefits, and you may be eligible for reimbursement depending on your plan. For therapy sessions, some licensed therapists in our network may accept Medicare or Medicaid directly. If you do not currently have a therapist, we can help match you with one who does.
How quickly can I get started? Most patients are able to schedule their intake appointment within the same week of completing their patient portal setup.
