Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health concern in the United States, with over 40 million adults (19.1%) having an anxiety disorder, according to NAMI.

Living with anxiety can feel like being caught in a never-ending cycle of worry, tension, and overwhelm. You might find yourself constantly on edge, struggling to relax, or navigating a flood of intrusive thoughts that make daily life difficult.

While traditional approaches like medication and talk therapy can be helpful, some continue to experience debilitating symptoms. If you’re searching for relief, Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) could offer hope for lasting change and a new path forward.

One of my clients who was facing debilitating anxiety and obsessive thoughts, experienced relief from her symptoms after just a few sessions. My KAP clients have seen robust change in their lives, and KAP has been a helpful partner in our therapy. There’s a deepening that happens and a shift in perspective for the client that gives them a wider view of themselves and the world and what’s possible. The way that we see ourselves and see the world shifts. – Julia Pinsky, LMFT

What is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)?

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a form of Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy that combines the legal, medically supervised use of ketamine with continuous psychotherapy with a licensed mental health professional. KAP can help break through old thought patterns and is especially effective for anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other treatment-resistant mental health conditions.

KAP is offered by licensed psychotherapists and prescribers collaborating to create a safe, supportive, and structured experience. Unlike at-home ketamine treatments or IV infusions, which only target neurochemical relief, we use ketamine as a supplement to therapy for deeper emotional exploration.

“What I’ve been able to see from my clients with severe anxiety is that for the first time, there’s space between them and their anxiety. I’ve had several journeys with my clients where they step back into the room and say ‘I didn’t know what it was like to not be depressed,’ and they talk about things they couldn’t talk about before. It’s magical.” – Denise M. Williams, LMFT

How KAP works for Anxiety

Ketamine targets the underlying causes of mental illness rather than merely addressing the symptoms. Its rapid antidepressant and mood-enhancing properties are complemented by its ability to enhance neuroplasticity and foster new synaptic connections, leading to a more resilient and healthier brain over time.

With psychotherapy integrated, this neuroplastic state allows:

  • Disruption of anxious thought loops
  • Reprocessing of trauma or root causes
  • Greater emotional regulation and clarity
  • Increased openness, calm, and resilience

Most KAP patients report that they not only feel relief from symptoms but also gain new insights, emotional breakthroughs, and tools for long-term change.

What the Research Says

A growing body of clinical research supports Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) as a promising treatment for anxiety disorders. Studies suggest that ketamine can lead to rapid reductions in anxiety symptoms, and when combined with psychotherapy, these effects are not only enhanced but longer-lasting.

For example, a recent pilot study on KAP for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) found significant improvements in both symptom severity and emotional resilience, with participants reporting sustained relief weeks after treatment (Cohen et al., 2025). Another exploratory double-blind, placebo-controlled study demonstrated that a single dose of ketamine led to rapid and measurable reductions in anxiety for patients with treatment-resistant GAD and social anxiety disorder (Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics, 2021).

For real world data, a retrospective study in BMC Psychiatry involving 452 patients showed that individuals with anxiety experienced an average 50% reduction in GAD-7 scores sustained over a 7-month period following intramuscular ketamine treatments (Ahuja, S., Brendle, M., Smart, L. et al., 2022).

“My anxiety has drastically decreased, and I was able to face fear in a profoundly safe way. The dance therapy sessions that I have been doing alongside KAP helped me integrate this into my life in a powerful and long-lasting way.” – Chris, NY

Is KAP Right for You?

Wondering if you should try KAP? It may be a good fit if:

  • You’ve tried medication or talk therapy without lasting relief
  • You struggle with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), panic attacks, social anxiety, or trauma
  • You want personalized and integrated care beyond symptoms management
  • You’re open to working with a licensed therapist in a structured, supportive environment

Before beginning treatment, all Journey Clinical patients complete a comprehensive medical intake consultation with our in-house medical team. This evaluation covers both medical and psychiatric history to determine eligibility, identify any potential contraindications, and ensure patients fully understand the treatment process.

“I have been working with a client in their late 50s. They have reported a significant increase in confidence in the workplace. This client has shared multiple examples of standing up for themself and their patients, and has gained the ability to use their voice with upper management in ways that they felt unable to do pre-KAP. This is incredibly exciting given that this client has been experiencing anxiety and depression since they were quite young!” – Dana McDowell
